Mary (Marcia Gay Harden) suffers from schizophrenia. Only when she pursues her hobby of painting does she not hear voices. The voices in her head increasingly affect her family life as well. During one of Mary's rage attacks, the situation escalates and she injures her young son in the heat of the moment. In front of the whole neighbourhood, Mary is taken away by the police and admitted to a psychiatric clinic. From now on, Mary's husband and son have to cope with everyday life without her for the time being and learn how to deal with Mary's illness...
