England 1947: The famous master detective Sherlock Holmes (Ian McKellen) is now 93 years old. With his new housekeeper Mrs. Munro (Laura Linney) and her eleven-year-old son Roger (Milo Parker), he lives in seclusion at his country estate in Sussex and tends to his bees. His former friends and companions are long dead. Worried, the former mastermind realizes that his legendary memory is slowly but surely failing him. Above all, he is plagued by the fact that he can no longer remember the case that led him to retire from the detective business 30 years ago. All he remembers is that it involved a beautiful woman. More and more, Holmes becomes convinced that he absolutely must find out what really happened back then. And so Sherlock Holmes sets out to solve his last great case.
